John was born in Castleford, Yorkshire. He excelled from an early age in the techniques of line, form, and perspective.
In his last year at school, he passed up an opportunity of a place at Art College, in favour of an apprenticeship in the Construction Industry. His apprenticeship was short lived, and he followed his father into the Coal Mining Industry. He gained many skills whilst working in the engineering unit, and achieved a City & Guilds Award in metal craft/welding techniques. He left mining, but as part of a long term strategy he went back: Whilst seeking a direction in life,John was helped with assistance from the Colliery Manager. But he left the industry for good, and launch himself into the world of commerce.
John embarked on several ventures, instilling many memories in which to draw upon.
Being a lifelong student of learning, John eventually attended Wakefield College of Art, which set the course for a fundamental life changing experience, further enhaced at University of Leeds.
This established his outlook, attitude and how he directs imaginative thought into his work, ranging from near abstraction to fine figurative form.
He has tought line drawing and painting at the local primary school for quite a number of years.
