Biography
Born in 1976 and originally from Crewe in Cheshire, Andrew Jenkin now lives in North Wales with his wife Tracey and daughter Violet.
Andrew spent his childhood in Honley near Huddersfield, drawing and sketching from an early age. As a young man he studied at Keele University in Staffordshire where he obtained an Honours degree in History and Ancient History.
Upon his return to Huddersfield, Andrew worked as a land-surveyor and revived his interest in art; he began painting in 1999 at evening classes held at the North Light Gallery Art School.
In 2003 he set up the Arjent Design studio in a nineteenth-century textile mill near Huddersfield. Arjent Design continues to produce greetings cards, bookmarks and prints from his paintings, which depict well-known buildings and landmarks around the North of England.
Andrew joined the Huddersfield Art Society in 1999, soon accepting the role of Secretary and then Vice-President. He remains an active participant in the Society, and in 2009 won the Eleanor Sykes Award (‘best in show') at the Annual Exhibition with his watercolour ‘Autumn Gold'.
He taught watercolour classes at North Light Gallery Art School in Armitage Bridge, where he was Head Tutor until moving to North Wales in 2010; he still gives regular demonstrations to art groups and societies.
In 2009 Andrew retold and illustrated the popular legend of the Lambton Worm in his first book ‘The Curse of the Lambton Worm'. The original illustrations toured a number of exhibition venues throughout the year, and Andrew held a series of art workshops in schools and libraries. The book was featured in North East Life magazine and on Sun FM (Sunderland local radio). In 2011 the illustrations and research from the book were displayed as part of an exhibition at the Akron Fossils & Science Centre in Cleveland, Ohio.
Andrew has undertaken a variety of commissions for private individuals, more recently for the University of Huddersfield.
